Plot Summary:
Written By Neil Simon Directed by Steve Jones
Fools is a 1981 comedy play written by Neil Simon. The plot involves a bright-eyed schoolteacher named Leon Tolchinsky who lands his dream job teaching in an idyllic Russian village. When he arrives in the village of Kulyenchikov (located somewhere in the Ukraine) he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. Hired to educate the town doctor's daughter, Leon promptly falls in love at first sight with the impossibly beautiful (and impossibly stupid) young maiden, Sophia. It turns out that Kulyenchikov is under a curse. The town has been cursed with "Chronic Stupidity" for 200 years. The curse also makes it impossible for Sophia and the other villagers to leave the town or grasp the concept of love. The only way to break the curse is for Leon to either educate Sophia, who is so stupid that she has only recently learned how to sit down, or for her to marry another man, Count Gregor Yousekevitch. Unfortunately, no one tells Leon that if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse, he too falls victim to the curse and becomes stupid. This comic fable by the greatest comedic playwright of the 20th century will tickle your funny bone and tug at your heartstrings! You would be foolish to miss FOOLS!
