'FRUIT FLY'
H.P. MENDOZA | COMEDY | 92 MIN. | USA| HDCAM | 2009
Filipina performance artist Bethesda Manolo (LA Renigen) is on two quests: to find her biological mother, and keep performing wherever she travels. The latter lands her in San Francisco, vying for a spot at a theater and sharing a house with a random assortment of artists, dreamers and those who haven't quite made up their minds. While Bethesda Is nearing her opportunity to perform, she is caught off guard when she finds a mysterious clue to her biological mother. Bethesda musters all her strength and spunk to resolve the clue to her past, the performance in her future and the possibility that she could be a bona fide fag-hag.
In H.P. Mendoza's directoral debut, he channels his musical brilliance and unique style to make a film that channels the spirit of colma: the musical but creates something completely new. Mendoza is the master of musicals for adultsedgy and clever, FRUIT FLY moves seamlessly from story to song, from gravity to wit. La renigen shines on screen as a girl who knows exactly what she wants but needs to take a few detours along the way. ~ Rose Pergament, Associate Director/Programmer
