The Meeting Point presents "Working the Line"
Dance company The Meeting Point presents "Working the Line", a new work in movement, space, and light. Grounded in the question of how to make a dance, "Working the Line" is a work of sensuality and sound, humor and paradox, contemplation and vividness, choreographed by Julie Nathanielsz. Elaine Dove, Heloise Gold, Julie Nathanielsz, Meg Sullivan (dance), Natalie George (light), Sarah Lankenau (costume)
The program also includes a screening of two experimental videos, "Duet I" and "II", which capture the interactions of a dancer, a wall, a tube, and camera. These short works were conceived by Nathanielsz, with Duet II shot by Austin artist Beverly Bajema.
Program length: 45 minutes.
About the Meeting Point.
The Meeting Point is an ongoing movement research project exploring connections between dance composition and the action of perceiving. By viewing perceptual systems as feedback loops, perceiving becomes choreographic content. The project continually develops new techniques for making improvised and choreographed works, and has a strong commitment to collaboration with musicians. The group has performed at the David Cohen New Works Festival, the Open Spaces series at Church of the Friendly Ghost, in the Blanton Museum's 20th Century Americas gallery for B-Scene, and as the keynote performance for the American Dance Therapy Association's 2008 annual conference. Current members of the project come from backgrounds in classical and experimental dance forms, theatre, martial arts, and sculpture.
Julie Nathanielsz has been researching, in one way or another, the connection between sensation and dance composition, in solo and group forms, for over ten years. Her choreographic work digs into character and narratives embedded in touch, sight, and vibration; her piece Isabella was nominated for two Austin Critics Table awards. Past works include For Larkin (2009) with saxophonist Carl Smith, Duet (2008) for two dancers and an amplified wall, and Isabella (2007) a collaboration with costume technologist Eleanor Fluharty. In 2007, she founded The Meeting Point. Julie has taught widely in the Austin community, and was a member of dance-theatre company Margery Segal/NERVE for eight years. She holds an MFA in Dance from UT Austin.
