June 13th, Noon-2pm
"Modernism: Old and Young" is a performance and conceptual experiment that asks adults and children to re-make or "interpret" canonical Modernist works in the hopes of renewing and memorializing the great tradition of modernist painting. Part performance, art-history class and painting workshop, the piece asks participants to look closely at the masterpieces of the last century and to replicate them on a small scale. An event that calls for earnest participation, "Modernism: Old and Young" recalls, spoofs and revitalizes the art of the past by channeling it through the perhaps unskilled yet always sincere hands of two generations.
About Peter: Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, New York-based artist Peter Rostovsky works fluidly between traditional painting, sculpture and conceptual projects. His work has been exhibited both in the United States and internationally, including venues such as PS1/MOMA; S.M.A.K. Museum, Belgium; The American Academy of Arts and Letters; The Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; The Santa Monica Museum of Art; ArtPace; Sara Meltzer Gallery, The Project; Elizabeth Dee Gallery, and many others. He currently teaches painting at New York University and the University of the Arts, Philadelphia.
