Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet LIVE
Historic Fox Theatre Restorations presents the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet LIVE at Centralia's Historic Fox Theatre. Trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegria has developed a unique form of World Jazz that combines his distinctive approach to the jazz trumpet with the rich heritage of Afro-Peruvian music. Alegria will tour throughout the USA with his Afro-Peruvian Sextet featuring saxophonist Laurandrea Leguia; acoustic guitarist Yuri Juarez; bassist Ramon De Bruyn, drummer Hugo Alcazar and master percussionist Freddy "Huevito" Lobaton, who plays the traditional Afro-Peruvian instruments cajon (box drum) and quijada (jaw bone) and adds spectacular passages of zapateo dancing to each performance. The concert will showcase music from Alegria's latest CD Pucusana, which features guest appearances by Grammy award winner Arturo O'Farrill . After a significant presence on North American Radio for more than five months and reaching the top of the Jazz Week World Music charts and CMJ Jazz Charts, the Sextet sets sail for the United States from their native Peru. In all of Alegria's work, the rich legacy of the black music of coastal Peru can be heard in a contemporary jazz context. A cross-cultural exchange between the Americas is always present, carefully defining Afro- Peruvian jazz music as the newest voice to come from Latin America.
