34TH ANNUAL MLK BREAKFAST CELEBRATION WE WHO BELIEVE IN FREEDOM CANNOT REST HOLIDAY INN BY THE BAY 8:00 - 11:00 A.M.
Hundreds of people will gather from around the state to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at this annual breakfast celebration. This celebration is one of the largest and most diverse family-friendly events held throughout the year in the state and one of the largest in New England.
The program will feature a keynote address, music, and a youth performance with special recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The theme for this program, "We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest," is taken from the lyrics of Ella's Song written by Bernice Johnson Reagon of Sweet Honey in the Rock. The song was written about famed civil and human rights leader Ella Baker. Given Ms. Baker's role in the NAACP and work with Dr. King, it seemed particularly appropriate to remember her famous words as our nation grapples with issues of race and justice, and we are once again called to renew our commitment to the principles of freedom.
A program for children ages 5-13 will take place at the same time as the breakfast celebration. It includes the viewing of the film Our Brother Martin followed by some time to reflect and discuss Dr. King's life; creating a patch for the first Portland Freedom Quilt; and contributing to our community mural. For those interested, there will also be an opportunity to experience a yoga and dance session, learn to play some unique musical instruments, and/or take some time to read one of our many books on Dr. King in our book area. All welcome! Please join us!
There is still time to place a commemorative ad in the printed breakfast program booklet.
