BHAKTI & PHYSICS SEMINAR SERIES 1
A 4 CLASS SEMINAR with MURALI GOPAL 2:00-4:00PM / SATURDAYS JANUARY 24 FEBRUARY 14 THE BHAKTI CENTER 25 FIRST AVENUE NYC / ROOM 2W ADMISSION: $100
This seminar series is designed introduce the student to some of the concepts and questions of quantum physics and cosmology, and then view the same in light of the Bhakti tradition. From questioning reality to the weird implications of quantum physics to the mystic slumber of Maha Vishnu creating innumerable universes, you'll never view the world the same way. In the words of William Shakespeare: There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Hamlet (1.5.167-8),
Have you ever been faced with having to make a choice between believing in science or religion? Or are you fascinated by the cross-overs between modern physics and the science of the ancient Vedic civilization?
Some scientists claim there that science has disproved the existence of God and that scripture is not a source of valid knowledge. Others at best synthesize their belief with science by bringing God into the picture with an indirect role, which the first group of scientists view as a dead end to knowledge. In addition, discoveries in the past century dramatically changed major concepts of reality and posed important questions for which the books of knowledge of many of the world's religions have little to say about.
With this scenario, we turn our attention towards the East. Throughout millennia countless saints, mystics and yogis from the Indian wisdom tradition of Bhakti have set out on a journey searching for the foundation of this reality. Though following a method different from the orthodox scientific method, their findings are objectively experiential and nothing short of amazing; sometimes agreeing with science current scientific theories and sometimes challenging them to go deeper. The richness of the Bhakti tradition includes elaborate descriptions of the nature of the material world, the spiritual world, consciousness, God, etc. within a single framework not found in any other spiritual tradition in the world. These sages are calling out to us. Encouraging us all, whoever we are, wherever we are, not only to ponder reality, but to pick up our walking sticks, to follow in their footsteps, explore and finally realize by ourselves those same truths that they themselves have experienced.
The seminar series consists of three modules in the span of 4 weeks. 1st ModuleExploring Reality through Science and Religion Basic assumptions of science and Vedic spirituality, limitations of the current scientific method, arguments and counter arguments for intelligent design, the Vedic method of knowledge.
2nd ModuleQuantum Physics and Consciousness The mind body problem, wave-particle duality, measurement and interpretation in quantum mechanics, the quantum mind body problem, consciousness as a quantum phenomenon, consciousness according to Vedanta, elements of Sankhya, the body as a virtual reality machine.
3rd ModuleCosmology The four pillars of the Big Bang theory, inflation theory, beyond the Big Bang, questioning cosmology as a science, the cosmological and teleological arguments and counter arguments for the existence of God based on cosmology, time scales in the Vedas, creation of the multiverse by Maha Vishnu, Siva and Durga as the efficient and material causes, development of the elements, layers of the universe, matter and spirit, 3 Vishnus, the purpose of creation, beyond the material universes, the real choice.
