smARTfilms: FILM NOIR Series
Bainbridge Island Museum of Art's smARTfilms series fosters community conversation through the merger of film, visual art and narrative. After each screening, audience members are invited to participate in an open exchange of ideas through moderated discussions which serve to anchor the film in the art and craft of our region and our time.

The BIMA Bistro stays open until 7pm in advance of each screening for food and small bites.

January 20 1947 - OUT OF THE PAST - Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, Jane Greer. Directed by Jacques Tourneur. A private eye escapes his past to run a gas station in a small town, but his past catches up with him. Now he must return to the big city world of danger, corruption, double crosses and duplicitous dames.
January 27 1956 - THE KILLING Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Frank Lovejoy, Vince Edwards. Written and directed by Stanley Kubrick. A gang of greedy, petty criminals plan a race track robbery, but when one gang member tells his restless wife, she hatches a plot of her own. The plan gets foiled and disaster ensues.
February 3 1950 - GUN CRAZY Peggy Cummins, John Dall, Berry Kroeger, Russ Tamblyn. Directed by Joseph H. Lewis. A well meaning crack shot husband is pressured by his beautiful but dangerously rebellious sharp shooter wife to go on an interstate robbery spree, where he finds out just how depraved and deadly she really is.
February 10 1957 - SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS - Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtiss. Directed by Alexander Mackendrick. Powerful but unethical Broadway columnist J.J. Hunsecker coerces unscrupulous press agent Sidney Falco into breaking up his sister's romance with a jazz musician.
February 17 1981 - BODY HEAT - William Hurt, Kathleen Turner. Directed by Lawrence Kasdan. In the midst of a searing Florida heat wave, a woman convinces her lover, a small-town lawyer, to murder her rich husband.
February 24 2001 - THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE - Billy Bob Thorton, Frances McDormand, James Gandolfini. A Coen Brother film. A laconic, chain-smoking barber blackmails his wife's boss and lover for money to invest in dry cleaning, but his plan goes terribly wrong.
