Oregon band's "upbeat Dixie roots swampgrass Americana rock 'n' roll" has drawn comparisons to Old Crow Medicine Show and the Devil Makes Three
HILLFOLK NOIR and DAVID ROBERT KING AND THE LOST RIVER BOYS open
Live at the Linen presents Dayton Dean and the River King at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at the Linen Building, 1402 W. Grove St. in Downtown Boise's Linen District. Tickets are $8, All ages, full bar (ID required).
From the deep backwoods of the Pacific Northwest, sounds of awe-inspiring, upbeat old-time swamp/dixie rock 'n' roll music have risen to the music scene. Dayton Dean and The River Kings (daytondean.com) are boomy, bright and boldly exciting to watch. Listen to and download Dayton Dean MP3s at reverbnation.com/daytondean.
It all starts with lead vocalist and songwriter Dayton Dean, who plays a unique Dixieland style of guitar on a solid steel-bodied amplified resonator and delivers powerful soul-rusty vocal melodies - although, the real entertainment stems not from watching Dean play guitar or sing, but watching him simultaneously keep these solid upbeat rhythms on his custom-built, foot-operated drum set that features a bass drum, high-hats, tambourine, crash cymbal and even an old washboard and shaker played with four different foot pedals. Dean's solid and fascinating multi-talented performance blows all other hokey "one-man-bands" off the map.
This huge sound is completed by the addition of the River King, James "Dean" Egan, who keeps the backbone solid on double bass and vocals. Listeners are amazed when they hear such a full-band sound coming from two men. In addition, this rock 'n' roll duo is often accompanied by featured guest members on violin, piano and blues harp. It's safe to say that it's all quite a sight to see, and it's guaranteed you will leave the show inspired and humming the songs the whole way home.
Opening for Dayton Dean and the River Kings are Hillfolk Noir and David Robert King and the Lost River Boys.
Performing either as a full band with a rotating cast of local players, a duo of Travis and Ali Ward, or Travis solo, the self-described "death folk" band Hillfolk Noir plays country-tinged, delta-bluesed, psychedelic swamp-shack rags that are equally spooky and toe-tapping. Visit Hillfolk Noir at petometz.com and myspace.com/hillfolknoir.
After almost a decade of touring the world and recording straight-ahead rock music, singer/songwriter David Robert King is experimenting with the sounds he picked up while traveling with his band and drawing from heroes of the American song - Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt. His songs and live performances have caused quite a buzz in the modern folk/Americana world and are touching audiences night after night in the Northwest and beyond.
