Deb Olin Unferth/A Lot Less: Writing a Very, Very Short Story
In this workshop, students will investigate the "short short," or the very short story, that playful, provocative form that exploded during the twentieth century and continues to be a vehicle for unique approaches to narrative. Through discussion of a handful of stories, generative exercises, and workshop, students will emerge with new ideas about the form and drafts of a couple new stories of their own. Unferth’s short stories have appeared in Harper’s, McSweeny’s, and NOON, among many others. She has been the recipient of the Pushcart Prize for her short fiction. In 2007 her short-story collection, Minor Robberies was published, followed by Vacation in 2009, which earned her a Cabell First Novelist Award. Her next book, Revolution, is forthcoming from Holt.
