THE HIGH COST OF MIGRATION, featuring a post-film discussion (Doc Night)
This show will feature the following short film and full length feature: "My Beautiful Resistance" Filmmaker Penny Baldado, owner of Cafe Gabriela on 10th and Broadway in downtown Oakland, reveals her 3-year battle for political asylum on the basis of sexual orientation and gender discrimination. The film captures Baldado's courage, dogged determination and victory at the intersection of immigrant, civil and human rights. (7 mins.)
"Money in Minutes" A profile of Western Union and the dark underbelly of the multi-billion dollar Remittances Industry. It follows transnational families around the globe and their experiences with companies like Western Union who prey on migrant workers' need to support their loved ones across borders. This is the U.S. Premier of the film through the generosity of Rhizomfilm based in Hamburg, Germany. (1 hour, 30 min)
