Harpist Floraleda Sacchi in concert
Classical harpist Floraleda Sacchi begins her North American tour at Carnegie Hall in early April, continues on to venues in Toronto, San Francisco and other American cities, and concludes her journey with an intimate solo performance here in the Pacific Northwest. A dynamic young musician, Flora is a pioneer in more ways than one. At age 21 she published a very complete book on Parish Alvars, the "Liszt of the Harp". More recently, she unearthed in print and recording all the music of Sophia Corri, Dussek's wife and a brilliant musician and feminist in her own right. Floraleda's breakthrough CD is "Minimal Harp" produced by Decca, and her newest album from Tactus is a collection of Spanish dances, which allows her to showcase her lyrical vein.
Critics have lauded Flora for her diverse and refreshing musical projects, from her advocacy for the works of the Minimalists to her scholarship on Sophia Corri. Only recently has 18th century harp pioneer Corri been properly credited for her work, and Flora's musical detective work has played a role in reversing that wrong. Corri was married to the prominent harp composer Jan Dussek, and it turns out some of her compositions were published under his name. This interesting development provides a new answer to the old question "why are there are no female classical composers?" On a more contemporary note, Flora's inclusion of works by Philip Glass and Lou Harrison on the same program as more standard classical fare has helped to broaden the public's perception of harp music beyond the stereotypical strummings of cream cheese-eating angels!
This recital is presented by the American Harp Society with support from the Italian Cultural Institute.
