Event
Pharmakon, with Dorit Chrysler, Slither, and Kuperus/Bell
PHARMAKON: Margaret Chardiet was born and raised in New York City. As a founding member of the Red Light District collective in Far Rockaway, NY she has been a figurehead in the underground experimental scene since the age of seventeen. She points out that the environment there amongst so many other experimental artists (amongst them Yellow Tears and Haflings) inspired her to keep making increasingly challenging work. She describes her drive to make noise music as something akin to an exorcism where she is able to express her "deep-seated need/drive/urge/possession to reach other people and make them FEEL something [specifically] in uncomfortable/confrontational ways." Unlike other experimental projects, Pharmakon does not improvise when performing or recording. She is concise and exact; each song/movement is linear with a clear trajectory. Spin Magazine aptly points out that "She glowers in measured silence as often as she shrieks, and every serrated tone cuts straight to the bone, a carefully calibrated interplay between frequency and resistance."
DORIT CHRYSLER: Renowned as a premier thereminist, musician/composer Dorit Chrysler has had a prolific career as a vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, producer, and engineer. Chrysler made her professional debut at the age of seven at Austria's Opera House Graz. She has since gone on to collaborate with the likes of Elliot Sharp, Chicks on Speed, Matt Johnson (The The), Cluster, and Gibby Haynes, amongst many others. Chrysler has also written scores for several of Jesper Just's films. Of Chrysler, Ann Magnuson exclaims, "A wizard! A true theremin star! Imagine if Marianne Faithfull and Nikola Tesla had a love child, with Jane Birkin as the nanny and Bjork as the wayward Girl Scout leader!" Dorit Chrysler comes to Detroit via support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of ADULT. Detroit House Guests, a Detroit Arts Challenge project.
SLITHER: The duo of Heath Moerland (Sick Llama, Odd Clouds) and Chris Pottinger (Cotton Museum, Odd Clouds). "Primitive, droning reed work with delayed trash percussion, deep fog horn soundings and an Industrial-Folkways feel that comes across like a more hyper-active Sean Meehan/Tamio Shiraishi brain bender," says David Keenan of Volcanic Tongue.
KUPERUS/BELL: The evening starts at 8:30 SHARP with the debut performance by Kuperus/Bell, entitled "Women Dancing with the Spirits: No.1." This unique performance piece brings together artist/musician Nicola Kuperus and dancer/choreographer Biba Bell. The performance will examine obsessive repetition, the status of the performer, the gaze, disorientation of the body, and of course, spirits.
