04-01-2010 Black Pearl Poetry Slam
In celebration of National Poetry Month, Black Pearl Poetry, who has been credited for bringing world renowned legendary poets and artists to the metro valley area, will start the month into high gear by bringing two of the hottest shows to the desert.
On Thursday, April 1, 2010, Black Pearl Poetry Tempe Thursday will host its Phoenix 2010 Grand Poetry Slam. This highly anticipated event is the only grand slam for the Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe area, and will determine the 2010 National Poetry Slam Team from this region of the valley.
Coached by Black Pearl Poetry founder and CEO, Edward Mabrey Jr., the 2009 Phoenix team was the most successful poetry slam to ever explode out of Arizona.
This year, the company is very excited to see which of the local literary artists will make the team. Like the Olympics of slam poetry, these poets compete against one another for months in order to land a spot on the team. They will then unify, creating a dangerous mix of flavor, brilliance, and artistry. Each poet will be required to recite his/her own composition which will be judged by five randomly selected audience members. Out of those contestants chosen to slam on April 1st, only four will make the national team.
As an added bonus, internationally acclaimed spoken word artist, Taalam Acey, will perform a live concert that evening. Aside from being an award-winning author who has been featured on BET, in Essence Magazine, quoted in the Washington Post, and a panelist on the "Young, Gifted, and Black" Congressional Black Caucus 2007 and 2008, Acey, was featured in an acclaimed Radio-One London documentary on slam. It was here that Marc Smith, the founder of slam poetry, also used Acey's work as an example of slam poetry in his definitive book.
"While open mics are a lot of fun and often compared to watching a television with the remote on auto-pilot, says Ed Mabrey Jr., poetry slams are sort of like the same thing, but all the channels are high quality shows, no matter the subject matter. Things are just turned up a notch. With a Grand Slam, since they only happen once a year, everybody is bringing their A game."
The event takes place at Black Pearl Poetry Tempe Thursdays weekly venue, MADCAP Theater, located at 730 S. Mill Ave. Tempe, AZ from 8:00 pm -10:30 pm. Regular admission is $10, $5 for students. All proceeds from the evening will go towards the registration cost for the 2010 Arizona team.
