A Woman's Voice: Gabriela Lena Frank
The Hillside Club lecture series, " Woman's Voice" presents "Musica Mestiza" with composer Gabriela Frank who will address cross-cultural influences in classical piano music using live examples. Her dynamic style and enthusiasm for many styles of music should make this a very enjoyable presentation. Gabriela Lena Frank was born in Berkeley. In 2001 she received her doctorate from the University of Michigan in composition. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2009 and in the same year won a Latin Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Currently she is the creative adviser to the Berkeley Symphony, composer-in-residence with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, is working with Pulitzer Prize winning Cuban playwright Nilo Cruz on several projects, and is a composer on the Silk Road Project led by Yo-Yo Ma. Her compositions have been performed by many leading orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Kronos Quartet, and the ProMusica Orchestra.
