OBUGS' 3rd Annual Art & Garden Tour

The tour starts at St. Martin de Porres School where students transformed an asphalt parking lot into a thriving garden that yields organic herbs and vegetables. The tour then continues hiking, bicycling or shuttling with visits to three spectacular gardens that have successfully overcome various challenges such as steep terrain and water shortage. These gardens are a scenic 2.5 mile neighborhood loop, a short 10 miles away from the meeting point. The event will conclude with delicious food, refreshments and entertainment in the final garden stop.

All proceeds from this event will help OBUGS provide instruction in ecology, nutrition, and urban gardening to West Oakland youth.

Travel Options
a) Walking/Hiking
Tour begins at St. Martin de Porres Elementary School. You will then drive from this garden to the last garden at Lafayette and begin the tour by a nice down hill hike through the oaks to begin at our 2nd garden on the route. walking from second to third garden has an uphill walk which opens up to a gorgeous view, from the third garden it's a quick down hill walk to our the final celebration garden.

b)Bicycling - Cyclists will begin at St. Martin de Porres Elementary school and will cycle to MacArthur Bart (about 2 minutes away) Cyclists will provide their own Bart Fare $2.60 for a 14 minute Bart ride on Pittsburg/Bay Point train to the Lafayette stop. From there signs will point you along a 2 mile route (relatively flat) but it's HOT outside usually anywhere between 75-85 degrees. From Garden 2 to Garden 3 there is a short flat ride and then a 20 minute walk uphill with your bike (it's really very steep and easier to walk up - but feel free to give it your best!). Finally there is a very short steep down hill to our final celebration garden. Along the route there will be re-fueling water stations to keep you going!

c)Shuttling - Anyone is welcome to get on a shuttle to move from one garden to the next. You will be asked to drive from Garden 1 (St. Martin de Porres Elementary School) to our final destination where your car will remain safe and parked on private property for the duration of the tour. You will then be shuttled via three vans which will rotate from one garden to the next. Signs posted will let shuttle users know just where to wait.
