Egg Dinner for Harvest Time at Automotive High School
Restaurant Egg is hosting the second fund raising dinner to support the Harvest Time program at Williamsburg's Automotive High School. This program, started and run by teacher Jenny Kessler, features an organic garden, now in its fourth year, a farm stand, hands on cooking, and day and over-night food and environment field trips, all combined with her English curriculum. Students are introduced to the history and complexities of food systems and sustainable food production and distribution. On farm field trips many students have their first encounters with food at the source.
Students will help prepare and serve dinner, working with Egg staff to break down a pig for the occasion, conceiving and planning the menu, and delivering the food from the kitchen to eaters. They will see the food through from the beginning, when the whole pig arrives at Egg, to the end, when dinner is plated and served. If last year's dinner is anything to go by, the students will be providing entertaining table side commentary throughout the evening. Dinner will be accompanied by locally made craft beers and New York State wines. Every cent collected for this unique and fun dinner at Egg, will benefit the Harvest Time program at Auto High. Egg has been awarded the Slow Food NYC Snail of Approval (visit www.slowfoodnyc.org).
