Blood Into Wine - Synopsis Maynard James Keenan, internationally known as the front man for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, is one of musicâs most mysterious figures. A multi-million selling artist, little is known about the reclusive rock star who often dresses in costume and rarely gives interviews. In the mid-1990's, on a whim, Keenan left Los Angeles and moved to an Arizona ghost town (population 300). A wine enthusiast, he began to envision a world class wine region on the Verde Valley's craggy slopes and with wine mentor Eric Glomski (former David Bruce winemaker and current owner of the award-winning Page Springs Cellars), Keenan began the long road to bringing credibility and notoriety to Caduceus and Arizona Stronghold Vineyards amidst wine industry prejudice and the harsh Arizona terrain. Blood Into Wine takes viewers into the struggles and triumphs with a unique blend of comedy and master storytelling. Running time: 99 Minutes
More Information: Blood Into Wine is the new hit documentary that shares the story of Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer front man Maynard James Keenan and his mentor Eric Glomski as they pioneer winemaking in the hostile deserts of Arizona. The film premierd in theaters across the nation on Friday, February 19th. Maynardâs various musical entities have sold more than 30 million records worldwide. His bands have headlined the worldâs most prominent music festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Roskilde. Tool has been one of the most profitable and consistent touring bands over the past decade, while the man himself has reveled in revealing little of his personal life until now. On stage Maynard dresses in costume and stands in the shadows as an affront to typical rock star theatrics. Maynard even bolted from Los Angeles just as his band began to pay off, leaving behind a potentially lavish lifestyle for the craggy rocks of Northern Arizona, settling into an area of 300 residents and a rumored ghost town. His choices combined with the imagery and interests of he and fellow band members have led to a fervor for any information fans can glean about the Gen X hero. Blood into wine gives unprecented insight into Maynardâs world and his motivations for taking on the arduous task of bringing winemaking to the regionâs unforgiving landscape and how winemaking fits into Maynardâs creative trajectory. The film is Co-Directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke (the filmmakers behind critically acclaimed documentaries Moog and The Heart is a Drum Machine). The filmmakers are setting up independent film screenings across the nation between February 19 through the end of May, with a national publicity blitz to support these screenings. If your cinema has an interest in booking this film please read on. Maynard has consistently declined interviews throughout his career yet boldly allowed the filmmakers to openly challenge him as a âcelebrity winemaker.â Blood Into Wine features an eclectic cast including Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil), Tim Alexander (drummer for Primus, Pucifer), and James Suckling (world famous wine writer for Wine Spectator). As surprising as this may sound, the film could be considered a subversive comedy with appearances by Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim (Tim and Ericâs Awesome Show Great Job!), Bob Odenkirk (Mr Show), and Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, Big Fan). Maynard has long been known for being elusive and mysterous. Itâs something that has only deepened interest in him by fans, writers and radio stations as was evidenced by the wine signing tour he did with Whole Foods over the past year. Tens of thousands of fans showed up to purchase fairly expensive bottles of wine ($25 to $95 per bottle) with each event selling out with the line stretching blocks long. Blood Into Wine answers a lot of the unanswered questions and gives his fans something theyâve been eager for since the band started to gain popularity in the mid-90âs: a glimpse into his life and background.
