One Thing, and Everything Else
One Thing, and Everything Else
based on Gazebo by Raymond Carver
Directed by David J. Amaral
Composed by Joshua Dumas
Half-drunk, in the fading light of their relationship, Holly (Ruth Bistrow/Pamela Maurer) and Duane (Eddie Bennett/James Whittington) lock themselves within a motel suite, and decide to have-it-out one last time. A close look at the frayed edge of their love reveals strands of what it once was, what it might have been, and what they each have lost.
One Thing... harnesses the strengths of various art forms, and draws them together as components of a lyrical and dramatic story. The creative team scoured the spare text of Raymond Carver's haunting short story Gazebo, diving deep into his characters and creating new pieces of action only alluded to in the writing. The resulting performance explores Carver's prose layered upon scenes of dialogue, music providing potent heightened emotion, and simple physical gestures that reveal tremendous secrets usually only shown through text. One Thing... weaves drama, narration, movement, song and score into a cohesive, modern opera.
Joshua Dumas has created a dynamic score that allows the composition to shift and change within each performance. By recording different aspects of the score separately, Dumas will 'play' the mixing board, making in-the-moment decisions, responding to and engaging with the actors.
Inspired by drone, noise, and 20th century minimalism, Dumas' score sets synth upon cello over french horn and reverb-soaked guitar in loose motifs that leave room for improvisation by the performers.
