About the Residency:
The Huntington is pleased to announce Cho-Liang Lin as our second annual artist-in-residence. The residency, inspired by the Chinese garden Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance, is designed to increase understanding of Chinese culture through music, performance, poetry and art. An internationally acclaimed violinist for over thirty years, Mr. Lin has collaborated with many of the great composers of our time, including Tan Dun and Bright Sheng, and is currently Music Director of the La Jolla Music Society's SummerFest and Artistic Director of the Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival. In addition, he has been faculty at the Juilliard School and is professor of violin at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music in Houston. For the Residency, Mr. Lin will present a series of public concerts, lectures, and school outreach programs designed to introduce Chinese music in the modern context with a particular focus on how Chinese music is expressed through, or composed for, Western instruments. For the final concert in the spring of 2015, Mr. Lin will curate and perform a concert for solo violin, string quartet and traditional pipa performed by pipa virtuoso Wu Man highlighting contemporary Chinese composers.
