Matt Crawford: The Value of Manual Labor
Matt Crawford has a Ph.D. in political philosophy and a motorcycle-repair shop, so he can make things, fix things, and ponder making and fixing things. On both economic and psychological grounds, Crawford questions the educational imperative of turning everyone into a "knowledge worker," based on a misguided separation of the work of the hand from that of the mind. Crawford's reflective manifesto, Shop Class as Soulcraft, was one of Publishers Weekly's top-10 books of 2009 and aims to restore the honor of the manual trades as a life worth choosing. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with Elliott Bay Book Company. Series media sponsorship provided by Publicola. Series supported by The Boeing Company Charitable Trust, and the RealNetworks Foundation.
