Event
Only the Brave Film Screening
Nakayoshi Gakko "Friendship School" of Mountain View proudly presents a special screening of one of the most important events in American history.
ONLY THE BRAVE is the first motion picture about the 100th/442nd as seen through the eyes of the men who lived it. Written and directed by award-winning playwright Lane Nishikawa, the story was based on the actual experiences of his three Nisei uncles who served in the 100th/442nd â as well as other veterans who shared their memories with him over the years.
The film captures the personal tragedies and sacrifices of the soldiers â played by Jason Scott Lee, Mark Dacascos, Yuji Okumoto, Greg Watanabe and Ken Narasaki â during the final days of their rescue of the Texas âLost Battalionâ (represented by Jeff Fahey and Guy Ecker).
Nishikawa also stars as the platoon leader, who is haunted by the death of his father (Pat Noriyuki Morita) and the hardships on the wives and girlfriends left behind (Tamlyn Tomita and Emily Liu).
ONLY THE BRAVE was produced by Karen Criswell, Eric Hayashi, and Jay Koiwai and funded in part by grants from the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program and donations from families of veterans who served in the 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service â spearheaded by the National Japanese American Historical Society. This long overdue film has been endorsed by U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye (a WWII veteran and Medal of Honor recipient who lost an arm while serving with the 100th/442nd), U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka, U.S. Congressman Ed Case, and such organizations as the 100th/442nd Veterans Associations of America, the Japanese American Citizens League, the Organization of Chinese Americans, the Japanese American National Museum and the Go For Broke Educational Foundation.
ONLY THE BRAVE is an opportunity to share the Nakayoshi Gakko programs and arts as well as a community event sponsored in part by Arts Council of Silicon Valley, Kawakita Graphics, and Medaka no Gakko and supported by Asian American Theater Company, San Jose Nihonmachi Outreach Committee, Japanese American Museum of San Jose, Japantown Business Association, Mountain View Buddhist Temple, and Yu Ai Kai.

About Nakayoshi Gakko (www.nakayoshigakko.org)
Nakayoshi Gakko (NG) or âFriendship Schoolâ is a Japanese-American arts and cultural summer school program established in 2000. The program provides children (grades 1-8) with enriching activities through instruction in fine arts, language, social studies, and daily demonstrations to further cultivate awareness and an appreciation of Japanese culture and heritage.
NG has a three point mission statement 1) to promote an awareness of Japanese culture in its historical and religious context; 2) to gain an appreciation of Japanese-American heritage; and 3) to encourage friendship and cultivate those values that characterize the Japanese way of life.
NG is a parent cooperative school, administered by a volunteer Board of Directors, taught by credentialed teachers, and specialty class instructors with a strong parent component for daily class assistance and committee work.
Nakayoshi Gakko's programs are funded in part by a grant from Arts Council Silicon Valley in partnership with the County of Santa Clara and the California Arts Council.
