The Body Snatchers
The fourth production of City Lit Theater's thirtieth anniversary 2009-2010 season, a world premiere adaptation of the 1950s science fiction novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney, will begin previews at City Lit Theater on Friday, April 2, 2010 and open for the press on Tuesday, April 6. The production, adapted and directed by two-time Jeff Award-winning adaptor Paul Edwards, runs through Sunday, May 9, 2010.
The Body Snatchers concerns a small-town doctor who discovers that the people around him are being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates. Finney's novel, published in 1955, has been the inspiration for four motion pictures: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Body Snatchers (1993), and The Invasion (2007). As a tie-in to the second film, Finney updated the novel to the 1970s and retitled it to match the movie. City Lits adaptation is of the original 1955 novel.
Paul Edwards won two Jeff Awards for his adaptations at the old Roadworks Productions theatre, of John Barth's novel The End of the Road and Geoff Ryman's novel Was. His adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray was produced by the old Wisdom Bridge Theatre, and recorded for broadcast by L.A. Theatre Works. He teaches in Northwestern University's Performance Studies department and has directed more than forty original stage adaptations of fiction.
The cast for The Body Snatchers is Thad Anzur, Jerry Bloom, Kingsley Day, June Eubanks, Susie Griffith, Andrew Jorczak, Brian Pastor, Shawna Tucker and Sheila Willis.
The design team includes Daniel Carlyon (audio-visual), Matthew Cummings (properties), Roger Wykes (set), Ricky Lurie (costumes) and Jeff Glass (lighting). Choreography is by Katie Spelman and fight choreography is by David Yondorf.
The Body Snatchers performs Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 3:00 pm, through May 9. There are also two Thursday performances, April 29 and May 6 at 8:00 pm.
