Oyster Club Event #8: Painted Churches
Join us for the last Oyster Club event of the year. We will head out to the Schulenberg area for a tour of the Painted Churches of Texas and a stop at Sengelmann Hall. Our guide on this trip will be Tom Spencer of KLRU public radio. Tom's documentary "The Painted Churches of Texas" chronicles the German and Czech immigrants to this area. They built a series of churches that from the outside look like typical country churches. But enter the churches and nearly every surface is covered with bright painting: exuberant murals radiate from the apse, elaborate foliage trails the walls, wooden columns and baseboards shine like polished marble in shades of green, gray and peach. These are the Painted Churches of Texas. The tour will include a German/Czech cuisine lunch at Sengelmann Hall. Sengelmann Hall is a restored 1890's Texas dance hall, saloon, biergarten & German/Czech restaurant in historic downtown Schulenburg, TX.
Marla Camp of Edible Austin will provide Dry Soda and Reel Popcorn for the bus trip, as we (technology permitting) watch the KLRU Painted Churches documentary (winner of the National Educational Television Associationâs award for Historical Documentary of the Year (2001).
Our special thanks to Tom Spencer for volunteering his time to The Oyster Club and to all the churches for agreeing to open especially for us on this Saturday before Easter.
And we remain grateful to Edible Austin, and all of the local food and beverage vendors that have participated in The Oyster Club this year, we hope you will all remember them when you are heading out for food or catering an event. And a big thank you for the fabulous photography from Rino Pizzi and Stephen Pruitt!
