The Monkey King: a Circus Adventure
Monkey King: a Circus Adventure
Using masks, circus, and original music, the Advanced Students of the clown conservatory bring China's most beloved and playful story to life.
The Clown Conservatory at San Francisco Circus Center is the only institution in North America offering comprehensive training in circus clowning. It began in 2000 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. To date, 120 clowns have graduated from the program; 70% of these graduates are now working professionally in circuses, theaters and other performing companies.
The Clown Conservatory Advanced Program Ensemble Performance track creates and performs an original clown play based on a classic story. Last year's "Wonderland", a circus interpretation of Lewis Carroll's famous stories, played to thousands of people in the Bay Area and across Northern California.
Monkey King is the most beloved character in China, inspiring operas, circuses, TV shows, comics and much more. Monkey's journey to India as the supernatural bodyguard to Sanzang, a Buddhist priest, was written down in the 16th century, filling 100 chapters, each one more elegant, bizarre and action-packed than the last. The Clown Conservatory has taken some of the wildest adventures, bringing them to life on stage with acrobatics, juggling, puppetry and music. In the style of Commedia dell'Arte, which grew up in Venice at the same time as Monkey King stories ruled China, many of the characters will be in masks.
Directed by Clown Conservatory founder and director Jeff Raz with Felicity Hesed, "Monkey King" features original music by Johannes Mager, dramaturgy by Doyle Ott and performances by advanced students of The Clown Conservatory at San Francisco Circus Center.
