Search and Restore is excited to present a rare performance from this loaded band, which happens to be an amalgamation of the few who have already performed at our new home, 45 Bleecker. If you made it out to the Alas No Axis or Kneebody shows, you know how great it is there, and the community vibe is strong in that space. So come on out and a be a part of another great night of music, one cover gets you in for both sets.

Like a number of key figures in the Downtown music scene, Chris Speed grew up in Seattle before relocating to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory. There he co-founded the collaborative ensemble Human Feel, with drummer Jim Black, alto saxophonist Andrew D'Angelo, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and bassist Joe Fitzgerald. Speed was also a member of Orange Then Blue, the creative big band led by drummer George Schuller (son of Gunther). Soon after moving to New York, Speed joined several pioneering ensembles including Tim Berne's Bloodcount, the Dave Douglas Sextet, and Myra Melford's The Same River, Twice, critically acclaimed as three of the 1990s' top working bands in jazz and improvised music.

Throughout the years, Speed, along with a constellation of likeminded artists such as Jim Black, and Iceland's Skuli Sverrisson and Hilmar Jensson, has defined a unique sound influenced by a love of free jazz, modern rock, eastern folk and minimalism. These include Pachora, the quartet which links creative improvisation with Eastern European, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern folk music; Iffy Trio featuring Ben Perowsky and Jamie Saft; Jim Black's post-rock quartet AlasNoAxis; John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet; and Yeah No, which perhaps incorporates all of these elements most broadly.
