THE KEPT IMPULSES TOUR :: Hauschka (FatCat) :: Nancy Elizabeth (Leaf) :: James Blackshaw (Young God)
HAUSCHKA + NANCY ELIZABETH + JAMES BLACKSHAW 'Kept Impulses Tour', May 2010
Tour Summary
The Kept Impulses tour brings together three young music makers who combine folk, classical and contemporary song into textured, emotional and transfixing songs and suites.
The prepared piano player Hauschka (Dusseldorf/FatCat), singer/multi-instrumentalist Nancy Elizabeth (Manchester/The Leaf Label), and the 12-string guitarist James Blackshaw(Hastings, Kent/Young God) are brought together for this special tour to entice concert halls with their beautifully matched music.
All three have the endearing talent of being able to harness wild impulses into measured and musical journeys that run deep.
Each artist will perform solo each night, with the other two musicians guesting on selected tracks. The acts are musically complimentary and these collaborations are an exciting prospect, combining Hauschka's percussive piano interventions with James Blackshaw's cascading acoustic guitar and Nancy Elizabeth's pure and emotive vocals.
All three acts quote from a breadth of traditions (Eric Satie, English 'Rose and Thorn' folk, and American Primitivism respectively) but have modernistic leanings and individualistic styles that make their music fresh.
They experiment with form, texture, melody and atmosphere, but remain very accessible to the ear. They conjure up lyrical and cinematic suites of music and understand the transformative properties of music. They can take the listener on a journey through extended compositions or captivate with a perfectly-formed miniature. As soloists they know how to make their live performances magical experiences and are currently on dazzling form.
The tour will comprise 6 UK dates in concert halls/arts centres.

Artist Biographies
Hauschka (Fat Cat) is the Dusseldorf-based pianist Volker Bertelmann, who plays the piano in a myriad of ways. His music can be microscopic in detail and quietly entrancing, or widescreen and cinematic in scope and feel. A suite of songs that takes you on a journey into the world of the piano and all it can conjure for the listener. His beautiful post-classical chamber works draw on minimalism and are laced with the spirit of Fluxus. The results are startlingly original and vivid yet immediately accessible - Eric Satie's mischievous miniatures, Indonesian gamelan and The Books all get a look in.
Hauschka recently put out his second album 'Ferndorf' and an EP 'Snowflakes and Carwrecks' on Fat Cat. He has toured the world where ever there are pianos including stand out performances at Ether, Roskilde and Faster Than Sound festivals and a headline show at Union Chapel. He has played hand-picked supports with Tortoise, The Necks, Max Richter, and Mum and is currently working on a new release for Deutsche Gramaphone.
'Another gem on Fatcat that falls somewhere between the cracks of classicism and pastoral electronica' - Plan B

Nancy Elizabeth (The Leaf Label) has that something special. The songs of this Northern English multi-instrumentalist with a beautifully unadorned voice are slowly burning their way into the life of those who fall for her deft way with atmospherics and heart tugging emotions. She sings extraordinarily magical yet honest songs and has that ability to move audiences into appreciative wonderment with her performances. Nancy has that unquestionable strength of conviction which when combined with her emotionally terse lyrics and lack of fluffiness makes for a singer that stands apart from her peers.
Nancy's long awaited second album 'Wrought Iron' is out this October on Leaf and is getting incredible reviews. She has also recently been recording with James Yorkston and Susumu Yokota as well as playing with Efterklang, Seth Lakeman, Tunng, and Rachel Unthank and The Winterset. Winning sets at Roskilde and Bestival over the summer warmed her to new fans. She has toured folk clubs, concert halls and cafes in Mexico, Spain, Manchester and beyond. 'Beautifully, brilliantly bare... a lesson in how economy and atmospherics create true emotion... You'll find it hard to drag yourself away' - **** Mojo

James Blackshaw (Young God) plays celestial and spirit-lifting compositions on his close companion the 12 string acoustic guitar. His relationship with the instrument is near perfect. Meditative in quality, cinematic in scope his music spirals gracefully across complex patterns, motifs and harmonics and can unfold into extended emotional pieces. James's instrumental songs never fail to sweep the deep listener into his well of harmonics. It takes a rare and single-minded courage and commitment to make music with such a powerfully positive force at its heart, especially in these troubled times. This is healing music that reaches for what's possible, just beyond our grasp.
His first album on Young God 'The Glass Bead Game' has just been released and has been getting great reviews across the board. He has previously released on cult labels like Tompkins Square and Important. He was recently the subject of a feature on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme and is a roving member of the Current 93 group. He has toured extensively in Europe, US and Japan, from sold-out 1,000 capacity venues supporting Jose Gonzalez to intimate church shows, art galleries and rock clubs. Recently played his debut performance with The James Blackshaw Ensemble at a sold out show at London's Vortex Club.
'... a veritable solo symphony that's as schooled in uncommon beauty as it is in complex 20th century composition... Blackshaw writes high drama into instrumental music with subtlety and charm, speaking on sentiments and stories without requiring a single lyric... Blackshaw seems fully settled, engaging his pieces and ideas with the unflinching belief of Tony Conrad in 1964 or Steve Reich in 1965.' - Grayson Currin, Pitchforkmedia.com Listen: http://www.myspace.com/jamesblackshaw Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xE7FC6moUY&feature=related
