About Joe:
Who would you say are your greatest musical influences?
As a piano player my obvious influences would include Billy Joel, Elton John and Ben Folds. As a teenager, though I was drawn in by other keyboardists and listened to a lot of Progressive Rock. Bands like Genesis, Jethro Tull, Rush, Pink Floyd and Yes dominated my CD player. For a time I wrote in that vein, but eventually discovered the nuances of songwriting and realized that lyric and melody are what set songs apart, not odd meters and over-the-top solos. Discovering Ben Folds, Jeff Buckley and The Beatles later on in my career reminded me of the power of simplistic songwriting. So IÂÂve been focusing on creating music thatÂÂs direct in its approach, but also powerful.
And about Leslie?
Leslie Carey is a songwriter in basic black with a love for syncopation, melody, poetry and the methodology of songwriting. -Frank Vincent, Arden Coffee House 2005
She says there are three things she focuses on when writing a song, ÂÂItÂÂs really one part rhythm, one part melody and one part lyrics. And if a song is lacking in any one of these categories, then I feel like IÂÂve let the listener down. Of course a sense of humor is key too! We have an obligation to the listener to entertain; otherwise, what the heck are we doing here?ÂÂ
And The Miles?
The Miles are a four piece original band that takes the best parts of old school barn burning americana, improvisation, vocal harmonies, dirty blues, and modern rock, and turns it into something you can stomp your feet to and boogie with your lady.
