Philosophy of this workshop: Everything you need to know about what you're about to write, you already know. What you need is unfettered access to your instincts and emotions. Open to writers of ALL genres. Say yes to your impulses. Immerse yourself in the world of your next writing and put pen to paper for a one-day marathon. There will not be time spent reading aloud, it's all geared towards generating new material. This is a guided solo trip, with the camaraderie of other writers in the same room. Exercises will be playful and provocative to move you through self-imposed hurdles and inhibitions and get you writing fast and furiously. There will be a short lunch break in the middle. Face your fears, step into your deepest places and write from your heart. Want to begin a project but you're terrified? Can't make the time? The minute you sit down to write, you think your ideas are horrible or someone's already written it better than you ever will? Feeling vulnerable? Then you're in the right place. Come in with nothing, or just the seed of an idea for your next project. If you've just begun to write and you're under 30 or so pages in, that will work. Wear comfortable clothes so you can move around and breathe freely. Enter Saturday morning with an open mind, leave with a direct path into your next writing project.
Please wear comfortable clothes to move in
Open to all genders 16+
Biography of Workshop Leader:
Winter Miller is an award-winning playwright and founding member of 13Playwrights. WAM Theatre recently presented the sold-out New England premiere of her play In Darfur. The play originally premiered at The Public Theater, also for a sold-out run, followed by a standing room only performance at their 1800-seat venue in Central Park, a first for a play by a woman. She travelled to the Sudan border with Pulitzer-winning Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. Full-length plays include: Seed, Paternity, The Arrival, Amandine, The Penetration Play and Conspicuous and have been produced regionally and in Canada and Uganda.
Winter is a member of the Civilians R&D 2014-15 group and has been a fellow here: Sundance Institute, Hedgebrook, Blue Mountain Center, The Lark, Orchard Project, Voice&Vision and a member of the Cherry Lane Mentor Project and the Playwrights Center's Core Writers. Winter has created theater with youth in war-torn areas of Northern Uganda, Palestine, as well as marginalized populations in New York City. She currently mentors young women through Girl Be Heard and has worked with LGBTQ youth via Theatre Askew and underserved youth with Stella Adler Outreach. Winter teaches playwriting at Primary Stages' ESPA, teaches theater criticism to urban high school kids and leads a bi-monthly Weekend Warrior Writing Intensive.

She has written for The New York Times, New York Magazine, The Boston Globe and other publications and was once an NBC Page. MFA Columbia University, BA Smith College.
Testimonials: Winter's teaching comes from a generous and grounded place that is focused on empowering writers to find and articulate the stories they are trying to tell. --Karina Writing the last 10,000 words of my novel was like pulling teeth so I decided to enroll. Smart move. Each exercise somehow fit perfectly with my character's journey. --Yasmine The space Winter creates is so supportive. The day felt like a 7-hour massage. --Naomi There was no competition in the room. There was none of that tension that often works its way into workshop settings or writer's groups, because you are there for you and your story. Take this class. You'll walk away with a new story to tell, I guarantee it. Say yes. --Sarah
I didn't know I could write. I didn't know I could write a play -- Dinae I want you to know how instrumental your workshop was in creating this piece. There are several major plot elements that came about from the exercises you had us do in class, as well as some of the thoughts and questions you had for me during our one-on-one chat. My writing process also completely changed. I had never written by hand before your workshop. --Natalie I tapped into my "writer's brain" with innovative non-threatening exercises that opened doors for me to discover unexplored creative depths. --Zanne You will write more than you ever thought you could, yet be guided by a sailing captain who will always keep you on course and bring you safely into port. --Lucy Taking Winter's class was like breaking down the walls of a dam. She instructed us to go to some scary places with our writing; challenging us to wander out of our comfort zones. I've taken things I learned in her class and still apply it to my writing today. --Jan
