Workshop 1B: Bereavement After a Violent Death
A sudden, accidental, unexpected or traumatic death shatters the world as we know it and is too often a situation that we as human services professionals face in our day-to-day work. This workshop will focus on how individuals, families, friends and communities are affected in the aftermath of violent death by criminal acts. Participants will gain knowledge on vulnerability and other circumstances, which may complicate the survivors journey to accommodating to the violent death. Family members and friends highly traumatized by violent dying need to initially focus on restoring their capacity for maintaining a sense of safety, separateness and autonomy from the dying. But what happens when during their path to accommodating to the violent death circumstances arise that impede their progress such as the recovery and identification process through the medical examiner or the additional discovery of evidence which may surface through police, prosecutorial reports, and the media. Learn how important rituals of ending are and what helps when inevitable circumstances arise.
