Workshop 1A: Walking the Talk...Meeting the Challenges When Working with Youth and Violence Prevention
Working with the high-risk youth population is an important, challenging, and rewarding profession. As direct youth service providers, what we say and what we do, leave long-lasting impressions on the many youth we come into contact with. With such a high level of responsibility, we owe it to ourselves and to the youth (and their families and community) to ensure that we are the best positive role models possible and that we challenge and develop youth values and attitudes in a manner that truly support them. Self-reflection is a process that can help attain this by examining the impact of personal values, beliefs, styles of communication, and experiences. This process helps to develop a deeper understanding of ones culture, personal and cultural biases, experiences, and beliefs as these influence what we do in our day-to-day work. This highly interactive workshop incorporates fun and focused activities that help to immediately relieve stress and create a safe learning environment.
