12th Annual Afro Roots World Music Festival
Since it's inception back in 1999, the event has featured artists from various African countries as well as artists from the Caribbean and the Americas.
This years featured acts will include Delou Fatala, a traditional West African group from Guinea, spearheaded by Master Balifonist Ibrahima Dioubate. Also featured are the Nag Champayons whose sound which is described as afrogalactic and tropidelic , is catching on with audiences around the world. Headlining this year's festival will be Grammy nominated Cuban Son group Conjunto Progreso. The group will be celebrating their new live music CD release that features trumpet virtuoso, Arturo Sandoval. For this show, the group has invited a variety of special guests to perform for this occasion. Also featured will be World Renowned painter, LEBO, who will be painting live alongside the group.
Also, don't forget to check out The Festival of the Drum which is a free kick off event the night before (April 2)at Transit Lounge. The event will feature a variety of acts from Haiti including folkloric roots band Vodou Lakay and a CD release by renowned Haitian artist Jan Sebon and his global super group Kazak International. The night will get kicked off by Nacao Celeiro, a drumming troupe that plays an array of rhythms from the Northern regions of Brazil.
