Oyster Club Event #7: Visit the Home and Studio of One of Texas' Leading Modernist Artists: Ralph White
Please note - participation in this event is limited to the first 40 people that sign up! (number increased at noon 3/13/10)
The remarkable and indefatigable Ruby White is looking forward to taking you on a tour of the private home and workspace of her late husband, Ralph White (1921-2004). During Whites thirty-six years on the faculty of the University of Texas Department of Fine Arts, his style ranged from extreme realism and representational to highly abstract. The works on display in his home and workspace show the beginnings of an abstracted layering typical of the modernists with a treatment of form that somewhat suggests its regionalist underpinnings. If you didnt understand that, have no fear! We invite you to enjoy Hill Country Wine with delectable treats from Rios Brazilian while AMOAs own Dana Friis-Hansen joins Texas Art Historian Carl McQueary (author of TEXAS MODERNISTS Selections from the Collection of Carl R. McQueary), and Ruby White to talk about Whites life and work. Whites work has been included in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally. In 2002, he had a 60-year retrospective exhibition at Gallery 1313 on South Congress, and the following year was named Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist and was inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame. His works are housed in the permanent collections of major art institutes including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Witte Museum in San Antonio, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York, and the Ford Collection of American Art and others.
