Max Gabriel & Band
Based in Brooklyn, NY for more than a decade, Max Gabriel's finely-crafted songs distinguished by startling lyrics, his unconventional tenor voice and cinematic textures caught the ear of iconic producer/keyboardist Scott Healy. Healy's anything but modest performing and recording credits include Bruce Springsteen, Al Green, BB King, Jackson Browne and Branford Marsalis. Simultaneously Gabriel signed to sonaBLAST! Records, resulting in his debut recording, The Exile of St. Christopher. The CD features some of New York's best musicians: Steve Holley (Wings, Dar Williams) and Shawn Pelton (Shawn Colvin, Bruce Springsteen) play drums, Glenn Alexander (Phoebe Snow, Elvis Costello) and Jimmy Vivino (John Sebastian, Phoebe Snow, Max Weinberg 7) play guitar, and fretless bassist Bakithi Kumalo of Paul Simon's Graceland are among the all-star ensemble. Mark Geary, Kelley McRae and West Coast folk sensation Brett Dennen lend back-up vocals. Last summer Gabriel and Healy began session work for Gabriel's next project. Still in process, the second (and third) record will feature 25 new tunes from electronica to 70's style rock with the help of bassist Leland Sklar (The Doors, Leonard Cohen, Crosby, Stills and Nash), drummers Gary Mallaber (Van Morrison), Curt Bisquera (Elton John and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), and Pelton (from Exile). Ian Mathers who writes for The Village Voice among other NY publications said, "...He'll treat your heartbreak right, with the sense of devastated whimsy all real romantics have...He's got one of those wonderfully malleable voices that can sound a bit like everyone from David Byrne to Ed Harcourt, but always mostly like himself..."
