Recently named 2014's Best Blues Artist in New York by The Village Voice, Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton is a visually impaired, Jewish, African American multi-instrumentalist (banjo, fiddle, piano and guitar) who brings out the playful side of old-school blues and has caught the attention of every senior blues picker in the country. From the mainstage at Newport Folk Festival 2014 to street corners and clubs across the US, this 25-year-old plays the old, old stuff as well as original material in that style.
He'll be accompanied tonight by the The Down Hill Strugglers, the old time string band trio from Brooklyn that was featured on the soundtrack of the Coen Brothers film "Inside Llewyn Davis." Long-time folkies will appreciate that this young band has been mentored by Peter Stampfel of the Holy Modal Rounders and John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers. As heard on their Smithsonian Folkways album, they carry the music of old, rural America forward with verve and creativity.
