At the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, we believe that sustainability is about more than the environment it is about people. Therefore, we include issues such as protecting and enhancing public health, ensuring social justice, and educating and mobilizing citizens as part of sustainability. Two upcoming ballot initiatives affect the health and welfare of Coloradans, and the Alliance is taking a formal position on both Amendment 67 and Proposition 105 on the 2014 ballot.
Please join the Right to Know Colorado GMO and No on 67 campaigns to learn more about these initiatives and the effect they have on advancing sustainability in Colorado. Colorado Common Cause will also be on hand to help you update your voter registration, as well as educate attendees on the new voting process.
Proposition 105 requires foods that have been genetically modified or treated with genetically modified materials to be labeled "Produced with Genetic Engineering" starting on July 1, 2016. As Coloradans, we have a right to know what is in our food to ensure we can make well-informed decisions about the food we purchase and consume.
Amendment 67 redefines the term "person" by expanding it to include "unborn human beings." As a result of this broadest of definitions for "person", Amendment 67 would ban all abortions, including for victims of rape and incest and when a woman's health is in danger. It would also restrict access to emergency contraception and commonly used forms of birth control.
