About the Featured Artists

Srishti Dances of India is an Ann Arbor, Michigan based Odissi/Indian classical dance company which has been active since 1995. The Artistic Director of Srishti is well known Odissi dancer Sreyashi Dey. Srishti's mission is to disseminate India's cultural heritage through performances of Indian classical dance, music and theatre. The company plays an educational role in the community and regularly presents lecture demonstrations, multi-media presentations and workshops. Srishti offers instruction in Indian classical dance in the Odissi style.

Srishti Dances of India
Srishti is committed to increasing the region's multi-cultural offerings and has reached out to a diverse and large cross section of audiences in its endeavors. Focusing on the Odissi style of Indian classical dance from eastern India, Srishti's productions are marked by strong roots in the classical traditions. At the same time the company develops new and innovative choreography with breadth of vision, both within and across cultures. The infusion of contemporary thought into the practice of ancient art forms has been a hallmark of its presentations. One of Srishti's goals is also to preserve and present the wide variety and richness of the different styles of Indian classical dance. Toward this objective, the company invites well-known performers of different styles to present their artistry with the Srishti dancers, locally and in several US cities on tour every year.

People Dancing is a professional not-fot-profit dance company with a dual mission of art and education. Founded in 1985, People Dancing has longevity, exceptional artists and a unique motto, "Connecting Hearts through the Arts."  People Dancing has been lauded in the press as presenting a "dazzling display of the human form in motion" (Heritage papers) and as possessing a "satisfying physicality." (Murray Louis.). The dancers have been noted to grace the stage with "ethereal beauty"(Ann Arbor News) and to embody works that have an "offbeat, quirky theatricality," (New York Times) "Intriguing... Stunning..." declared critic Stephanie Reike, while the Baltimore Sun Arts Special writer states that the dancers are: "uncompromisingly assertive" and "Athletic and evocative!"

Dave Sharp
Dave Sharp was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan where he was exposed to and inspired by the city's rich music heritage. While earning a degree from the University of Michigan, Sharp became deeply devoted to the study of jazz and the perfection of his art. This devotion culminated in a move to San Francisco where Dave studied jazz and music theory with legendary bassist Herbie Lewis (McCoy Tyner, Cannonball Adderly, Les McCann) at the New College of California.

While living in San Francisco, Sharp served as bassist and composer for the modern jazz ensemble the Spheres of Influence and the Killer Joe Trio. After touring the West Coast with rock legends THE MELVINS, and playing a run of jazz venues in Tokyo, JAPAN, Sharp returned home to the metropolitan Detroit area in 1998, where he continues to compose, record, teach and perform live in front of appreciative audiences.
