Formed in Lancaster, PA in 2010, The Stray Birds, whose "playing is gorgeous, the harmonies exquisite" (WXPN), consists of Maya de Vitry (vocals, guitar, banjo, fiddle, piano), Oliver Craven (vocals, guitar, resonator, fiddle), and Charles Muench (vocals, bass, banjo). All classically trained and roots-music-raised, the trio has attracted attention with their blend of foot-stomping bluegrass, heartbreaking country, timeless gospel, and tender poetic ballads, all sung with soaring, transcendent vocal harmony. They've played on NPR's Mountain Stage, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival and right here at Caffe Lena. Following the band's 2012 highly praised self-titled release, which NPR Music named Top 10 Folk/Americana album, and 2013's Echo Sessions, they come to us tonight with a brand new album, Best Medicine, releasing this fall on the Yep Roc label. The album features 12 tracks, including 10 original compositions and two traditional songs, "Pallet" and "Who's Gonna Shoe."
Australian singer-songwriter Jordie Lane, a gem of a songwriter Jordie Lane, a gem of a songwriter, entertainer and collaborator, is joining the band for the full tour.
