Impromptu 4 Laser Piano
Celebrating nearly 20 years of showcasing Island talent, VAA New Works Series 2009 continues in October with a multi-media performance by artist/classical and modern improvisational pianist, Christopher Overstreet. He plays and teaches piano, composes work for other artists and does commissioned and contract work. Also a multi-media programmer, Overstreet will merge his performance and composition skills with self-designed computer software to create a spectacle of piano, movement and computer generated sound and light. Fresh from a 12-day stint at Burning Man, Overstreet explains how he plans to integrate improvised music from popular music of the early 1900's and classical repertoire then extrapolate from and mix with computer assisted audio and visuals. Semi-improvisational movement by his partner, Abby Enson will provide yet another visual element to the mixed media performance. "A lot of what I do is remix, much like a dj, he says. But Overstreet works from his own computer generated library of sound which he has developed over a period of months and years. Experimental in nature, his work uses the computer to push boundaries of the piano. "It's a challenge to try and merge these worlds‚" he adds. In addition to attending both New England Conservatory of Music and Cornish College of the Arts for composition, Overstreet has contributed to a number of high profile projects as artist, designer and programmer including X-box 2 Live Controller in the UK and Constructing Childhood, in UW's Allen Library. He has also shown work in Seattle's Jack Straw New Media Gallery, On the Boards and Seattle Public Library and has worked with movement artists and avante-rock groups.
