My Mother's Clothes Are Not My Mother
Celebrated Maine author Elizabeth Peavey returns to the St. Lawrence Center For the Arts in Portland on June 19 & 20 with a revived and refreshed version of her hilarious and heartbreaking one-woman show, "My Mother's Clothes Are Not My Mother," which won the 2013 Maine Literary Award for Best Drama.
The show premiered in September 2011 to a series of sold-out houses at the St. Lawrence. From there, it traveled to Sugarloaf USA ski area, where it was received by another packed house. In April of 2012, Peavey gave two performances at the Chocolate Church Art Center in Bath (her hometown), followed by another sellout at the Magic Lantern in Bridgton, as a benefit for the Bridgton Library. The show returned for two performances at the St. Lawrence that September. Other 2012 performances took place at Oxford Hills High School (a benefit for Project Graduation), Damariscotta's Lincoln Theater and a final performance at the CACC. From there, she put "My Mother's Clothes" on hiatus for a year. She relaunched the show this past February at Bay Path College, Longmeadow, MA, as a culmination to her week there as writer in residence. The St. Lawrence show is the first in Maine since 2012.
"My Mother's Clothes" is performed in a series of connected monologs by Peavey as she confronts the following: Losing a parent is difficult enough. Losing your final parent presents an additional challenge: What are you supposed to do with all your family's stuff? For months, she avoided wading through her late mother's things. But when her mom's condo sells, she's forced to reckon with its contents. As she does, objects surface, triggering memories from her childhood. Possessions she once thought would be easy to chuck - the Polynesian hors d'oeuvre platter, the outdated evening coat, the milk glass and tea cups - suddenly take on epic stature, forcing the question: How do we know when to let go?
Elizabeth Peavey is the author of "Glorious Slow Going: Maine Stories of Art, Friendship and Adventure," which was a finalist for the Maine-themed Nonfiction Award in the 2012 Maine Literary Awards. "Outta My Way: An Odd Life Lived Loudly" and of "Maine & Me: 10 Years of Down East Adventures," which was awarded the Maine Literary Award for Best Maine-themed Book. Her essays and articles frequently appear in "Down East" magazine, where she has been a contributing editor since 1993. She has taught public speaking at the University of Southern Maine since 1993 and has served as guest lecturer of creative nonfiction at University of Maine, Farmington. She has conducted memoir and essay-writing workshops for the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance since the early 1990s. Her latest book, Her monthly humor column, "Outta My Yard," can be found at thebollard.com. She is a frequent guest lecturer and speaker at schools, libraries and associations across the state.
