Design and Construction of a Cruise Facility in Skagway, Alaska
The Port of Skagway recently completed at $55M Cruise Ship Dock, this was designed, permitted, and built on a fast track 23-month timeline. The project included some unique approaches to financing, design and construction. The construction required an aggressive 7 days a week construction. The project had to overcome challenges with permitting timelines, huge Marine Mammal Monitoring zones and 40 days where the weather was so bad cranes could not work to name a few. The project had only one bid that came in higher than budget so the Municipality of Skagway, the engineers and the contractor worked together to remove scope modify the project to maximize what could be completed with the funding available.
The design included new 200 Ton capacity mooring dolphins in up to 160 of water that required piles up to 320 in length, a new 500 long floating dock and a lightweight orthotropic ramp down to the float. Geotechnical challenges included large seismic down drag and large pile demands. The site had environmental challenges as it contains widespread lead contamination from past lead ore export operations. The project had a large amount of ore loader structure that had to go through an intense abatement process before it could be de-constructed.
