FAM JAM-Family Reunion Benefit Concert
The Colwell Brothers, Herb Allen,and Vashon's all-family Cajun band, The Riptide Ramblers will stage a benefit concert/extravaganza at 3:30 pm, May 3, at Vashon High School Theater. Vashon Island Youth Chorus, directed by Marita Ericksen, will be on hand for the "jam" along with singer-songwriters (VHS graduate) Dom and his sister, Madeline Wolczko. Other family and friends will join in. Brothers, Paul, Steve, Ralph and Ted,former Columbia recording artists and globe-spanning trio, and xylophone virtuoso/composer/arranger/conductor Herb Allen, are the musical creators of international educational program and touring show, Up With People. The Colwells have worked and performed on six continents and have sung in 42 languages and dialects, from the remotest villages to presidential palaces. Allen, born and raised in Seattle and conducter of Seattle Baby Orchestra at the age of three, was Up With People's music director for four decades and has collaborated with the brothers for over 50 years. Together they co-produced and directed four Super Bowl half-time shows. The Riptide Ramblers, who play a mix of Southwest Louisiana styles, Cajun, Swamp Pop, Zydeco, and more features three generations of the Lang and Salonen families. The youngest are Danny Salonen, VHS Class of '08, on drums and his brother, David, VHS junior, on bass. East Texan and patriarch of the musical clan, Dave Lang and other members of the family are well known in the Seattle area and up and down the West Coast on the "Cajun" circuit. Their performance credits include Bumbershoot, FolkLife and Tractor Tavern.
