Oni Buchanan Poetry & Piano
From Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York and University of California at Berkeley, to Chicago Cultural Center and Eastern Oregon University and many points in-between during recent months, pianist Oni Buchanan has shared her piano virtuoso and poetry acumen. Her Vashon Island concert will feature music inspired by or relating to poetry, with repertoire drawn from a variety of cultures and different times throughout history. Buchanans vibrant, diverse repertoire solo piano concerts have been heard internationally in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Ontario, Canada. She has also performed the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts in Chicago, Baltimore Museum of Art, and Harvard University Hall Concert Series, among many others. For her Vashon Island debut, Buchanan will briefly discuss source texts and how form, style and substance of the music relates to form, style, and substance of the poetry that inspired compositions such as Liszts Petrarch sonnets, the first Ballade of Brahmss opus 10 set, or Cindy Coxs contemporary piece The blackbird whistling/Or just after. Other works will include: Debussy, four Preludes from Book I; Brahms, Four Ballades, Op. 10; Scriabin, Pomes, Op. 32 and 44; Villa-Lobos, Rudepoma; Schumann, Fantasiestcke, Op. 12 and more. Buchanan holds a Masters degree in piano performance from New England Conservatory of Music and her Bachelors degree from University of Virginia. Buchanan has released three solo piano CDs on the independent Velvet Ear Records label. An award-winning poet, with an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers Workshop, Buchanan will read from her second book of poetry, Spring (published by University of Illinois Press, September 2008) 7:30 pm, Friday, April 24 at Books by the Way. During her weekend residency on Vashon Island, she will also instruct a poetry workshop, Image Rhyme, from 2 to 4 pm, Sunday, April 26, at Blue Heron. Call 463.5131 for details. Spring was selected by Mark Doty as a winner of the 2007 National Poetry Series. Her first poetry book, What Animal, was published in 2003 by the University of Georgia Press. "Oni Buchanan is a species unto herselfHer playing is informed by a persuasively lyrical touch in the service of great poise and charm. No less affable than intelligent, her combination of brains, devotion, and personality produces a highly principled and attractive approach to art and to music," said Russell Sherman, Distinguished Artist in Residence from the New England Conservatory.
She will also hold a poetry workshop Sunday, April 26 from 2 to 4 pm, at the Blue Heron Art Center. Call 463.5131 for more details and registration. Read more about this amazing pianist and award-winning poet at onibuchanan.com.
