NOBLE
Special Jury Prize 2013/Ireland/United Kingdom (101) Director: Stephen Bradley
"We see CHRISTINA NOBLE (44), blonde and attractive, walking with determination through the streets of Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) in 1989. She is searching for the reason she has come halfway across the world on the strength of a dream she had twenty years ago.
In a series of flashbacks, where humour mixes with tragedy and harsh reality is undermined by up-lifting fantasies, we see Christina finding the answers
Christina Noble's childhood in the Dublin slums is shattered at the age of ten when her mother dies. Her father's alcoholism plunges the family into further poverty and the children are sent away to industrial schools. She returns to Dublin when she is sixteen only to be betrayed by her father and left homeless. She lives rough in the Phoenix Park for a year and struggles to survive. Following an horrific abduction and gang-rape she is unaware that she has become pregnant until she is taken back into care. She is betrayed once more when her baby is given away for adoption without her knowledge.
In order to escape the memories of her childhood she leaves Ireland and moves to England with a friend. For a couple of years her life improves and she gets married to a Greek Cypriot called Mario Pistolas with whom she has three children. However, as Mario's behaviour descends into chronic infidelity and abuse, Christina begins to have visions and dreams about Vietnam, a country whose location and history she knows very little about.
It is only when she and her children escape from Mario to the safety of a new life that she feels able to explore the root of her dreams..
At the age of 44, Christina travels to Vietnam where she believes that her destiny lies. Her dreams become reality on the streets of Saigon and she resolves to dedicate the rest of her life to helping street-children. With the aid of new-found Vietnamese friends and Madame Linh, who runs an orphanage, Christina successfully strives to plan and fund projects to look after the children known as 'Bui Doi' the dust beneath your feet. This is the beginning of The Christina Noble Foundation that has built over a hundred projects across Vietnam and in Mongolia, helping the lives of more than seven hundred thousand children and allowing Christina to reclaim her own childhood."
