Zemya with Spoonmaker's Diamond
Zemya and Spoonmaker's Diamond offer a taste of world melodies from far corners of the planet, bringing their distinctive styles and unique talents to Maine audiences. Performing together for the second time, both groups share a passion for the unifying, energizing power of music.
The women of Zemya blend beautiful, edgy harmonies in a repertoire that celebrates folk traditions from the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the British Isles and the Americas. Directed by Deborah Gordon, Zemya singers include Joy Ahrens, Barbara Beckelman, Hildy Ginsberg, Abby King, Mischa Schuler, and Ann Swardlick.
Spoonmaker's Diamond plays authentic and entrancing tunes from Turkey, Armenia, Andalusia, the Balkans and the Middle East. The quartet includes Steve Carpenter on percussion, Barbara Truex, strings and vocals, Steve Gruverman on woodwinds, and Joanne Rawlings-Sekunda, vocals and percussion.
