Familiar to folk audiences worldwide for her work with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, cellist Leyla McCalla is on tour in support of her debut album, Vari-Colored: A Langston Hughes Tribute. Already released in Europe, the Times of London selected the album as their #2 World Music album of 2013. Born in New York to Haitian immigrants, McCalla drew inspiration for this project from Harlem Rennaissance poet Langston Hughs' poems and plays about Haiti. Alongside the Hughes pieces there are a couple originals and traditional Haitian folk songs. In addition to her spare, often plucked, cello, McCalla also plays tenor banjo and guitar. McCalla will be supported by two other musicians for tonight's performance.
