Tonight we revisit the songs of two folk music greats: Utah Phillips and Richie Havens. The legendary Utah Phillips, the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest, referred to his son Duncan as his "road manager," but Duncan assures us that his father couldn't be managed. Along with Utah's old road-worn Guild guitar, Duncan inherited his father's songs and stories when Utah passed away in 2008.
Florida guitarist Walter Parks is "an extraordinary singer whose songs can break your heart as well as get you dancing . . . To hear him is to be lifted into a mystical sphere. I adore him." Judy Collins
Walter is known around the world as the long-time lead guitarist for Richie Havens as well as one half of folk-duo The Nudes. Inspired by swampy gospel blues, Parks' original work--performed solo tonight--is full of boot-stomping, guitar-strumming tunes that explore soul and spirit in the language of jazz and folk. Parks will be performing Richie Havens' classics alongside his own songs.
