Philomena
Based on a true story, serial Oscar nominee and winner Judi Dench plays an Irish woman who has spent much of her adult life vainly searching for her out-of-wedlock son whom Catholic nuns seized and sold to an affluent American family. Philomena recalls the disturbing Magdalene Sisters(2002) which first exposed this practice. Dench is aided in her quest by Steve Coogan who plays a journalist. Alternately biting, funny, and heart warming, with plenty of surprising twists and turns, Philomena marks a strong comeback for director Stephen Frears and has proved a crowd pleaser at this year's festivals, earning standing ovations at Venice and Toronto, where it won Best Screenplay at the former, and was runner-up to for the top prize at the latter.
