August: Osage County
Based on Tracy Letts Pulitzer Prize winning play, this film tells the story of Violet (Meryl Streep), the cancer-ridden, drug-addicted matriarch of an Oklahoma family who gather around her bedside to pay their respects, vent their grievances, and listen to Violet raging against the inevitable. The cast is extraordinary, including not only Streep, but Julia Roberts, Sam Shepard, and the incomparable Margo Martindale. August: Osage County gives us a terrific script, and great actors doing what they do best. Directed by John Wells, the show-runner with a golden touch, who has some of TVs finest shows on his dance card, including The West Wing, ER, Shameless, and Southland. There are so many potential Oscars buzzing around this picture that it may be hard to see the screen.
