The Book Thief
Adapted from the best selling World War II novel by Markus Zusak that took out a long-term lease on the N. Y. Times bestseller list, The Book Thief tells the story of a nine year-old German girl who ekes out pennies by stealing books. Her foster father teaches her to read. As Allied bombs rain down on her country, her books become her salvation. She shares them with her neighbors as well as a Jewish man hiding in the basement who is eventually taken off to Dachau. Geoffrey Rush plays the foster father, and Emily Watson is his wife. The Book Thief is a first feature from veteran British TV director Brian Percival who has many episodes of Downton Abbey under his belt. He will be on hand to answer questions after the screening.
